Summary

The Surrey Cavalcade at Reigate Priory was one of a series of pageants on the site, held in 1953, 1956, 1959, and 1963, and one of a number in Surrey written and produced by Cecile Hummel, headmistress of Merstham Grange School. Regarding this pageant, Hummel wrote:

There is enough history of Surrey to make several Pageants. In writing Surrey Cavalcade my difficulty has been to know what to discard. I have tried to travel as far a distance in time and space as possible and to pick out incidents which will dramatise effectively and be sufficiently simple for all to understand. When faced with facts and very little detail I have had to draw on my imagination as to what might have happened.1

In the case of this pageant, the action ranged from the late Roman period to the twentieth century.
