Come to the Borders and see our exhibition!

In 1928, 1951 and 1977 the people of Carlisle staged large and highly successful historical pageants. Thousands of Cumbrian citizens took part in these events which depicted the colourful history of a part of the UK which has always been important in the national story of the British Isles. From Roman times to the coming of the railways, Carlisle was a place of strategic significance and its citizens are proud of their past. This exhibition at Tullie House Museum will tell the story of how the city of Carlisle was among the most enthusiastic sites for historical pageantry during the twentieth century. The exhibition will include rare film footage from 1928 and extracts from the BBC sound archive dating from 1977, as well as a multitude of ephemera from all three pageants. During the exhibition, sound clips from oral histories conducted with performers and organisers who took part in the pageants will be available to hear via our website.
