Tullie House Previews a New Exhibition
On Friday 21st August members of the Redress of the Past team attended the preview of our new exhibition hosted by Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery Trust. Over one hundred invited guests (including many of our interviewees) came along to a reception and to see the exhibition ahead of its opening to the public on Saturday 22nd. We were also honoured by the attendance of Carlisle’s Mayor, Cllr Steve Layden.
The exhibition looked wonderful thanks to the hard work of the team and many members of staff at Tullie House, in particular the curator of social history Edwin Rutherford. Ed did a magnificent job of presenting the museum’s many pageant artefacts. Among the various items on display was restored film of the 1928 pageant. This film may be in black and white, and, of course, is silent; yet it shows the full glory of this event - the lavish costumes and the spectacle envisioned by Frank Lascelles who was Pageant Master.

Guests at the preview were interested to see archive footage of the pageants .
The 1951 and 1977 Carlisle pageants were also well represented with costumes, images and ephemera, much of which has been recently donated to the museum by people who heard about the forthcoming exhibition and whose interest was sparked.
The Carlisle Pageant exhibition includes many original costumes and artefacts from the museum's collections.
The exhibition will run until mid-October and we are all certain that it will both bring back many pageant memories for visitors as well introduce younger people to the joys of historical pageantry!
