Tunnock's Tea Cakes and Writing Workshop
Greetings from Glasgow! We’ve been ensconced in the meeting room at Lilybank House working on some essays on a variety of themes, ranging from the depiction of World War I in pageants to the pageant-crazed town of Arbroath. Fuelled by a potent combination of Tunnock’s Tea Cakes, fruitcake and muffins, we have made excellent progress on our drafts. You can expect to see these soon:
“Pageants and Anniversaries”, which explores the role played by historical pageants in early twentieth-century cultures of commemoration.
“Pageants and Small Towns”, which looks at the relationship between pageantry and the resilience of civic culture in a quickly-modernising world.
“Depictions of War in Pageants”, which explains the – perhaps surprising – inclusion of realistic scenes of death and war in the pageants of the 1920s and 1930s
“Arbroath: pageant-mad”, which looks at Arbroath’s status as the postwar pageant hotspot of the UK.
Looking forward to getting these out soon!
